Honoring Women in Construction Week 2025

This week, Southwest Industrial Electric proudly joins the industry in celebrating Women in Construction (WIC) Week — a dedicated time to spotlight the strength, skill, and leadership women bring to the world of construction.

WIC Week is about more than recognition — it’s about continuing to open doors, create opportunities, and champion the women shaping our industry every day. This Month in Electrical History: March 20, 1886 – The first complete system of alternating current (AC) power transmission

On March 20, 1886, William Stanley, Jr. successfully demonstrated the first complete system of alternating current (AC) power transmission in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

Using transformers and an AC generator developed under the guidance of George Westinghouse, Stanley proved that electricity could be transmitted efficiently over long distances — a major breakthrough that helped shape the modern power grid.

This moment marked a turning point in the “War of Currents,” showing the superiority of AC over direct current (DC) for large-scale distribution. Today’s electrical infrastructure — from homes and cities to renewable energy systems — still relies on the principles Stanley helped establish.

At the heart of it all is dependable, scalable electrical engineering — something we’re proud to contribute to every day.

This month, we highlight Max Carraher, a key member of our management team, who plays an important role in delivering excellence on our projects.

What is your position at SIE and what interested you in such work?

I'm the Personnel Manager here at SIE. I truly enjoy helping others. In this role that is something I regularly get to do. People are valuable and they are the most important aspect of any company. Helping a person grow professionally and as a team member is a very satisfying effort that I enjoy thoroughly.

What do you enjoy most about your job and working at SIE?

I very much enjoy successfully solving issues that are seemingly insurmountable. Due to the nature of my position, when I solve a situation, it tends to improve the work lives of SIE staff. Helping to foster that improvement in a significant part of a person's life is a very rewarding experience.
